Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Most patients recover quickly after a tooth extraction, and we’ll review these instructions with you before you leave the office. The guidelines below will help support healing and keep you comfortable.
Immediately After Your Extraction
- Bite firmly on gauze for about 30 minutes to control bleeding.
- Remove and replace gauze as needed if bleeding continues.
- Repeat this process until bleeding subsides.
The First 24 Hours
- Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or use a straw.
- Avoid touching the surgical area.
- If prescribed a mouth rinse, begin the following day and spit gently.
Medications
- Take prescribed pain medication early, before the numbness wears off.
- Continue antibiotics for the full prescribed duration.
- Avoid taking medications on an empty stomach.
Activity
- Limit physical activity and avoid heavy lifting for 1–2 days.
- Gradually return to normal activity as you feel comfortable.
Swelling & Ice Packs
- Use ice packs (20–30 minutes on/off) for the first 24–36 hours.
- Apply to the side of the face where the procedure was performed.
- This helps reduce swelling and discomfort.
