Exposure of Impacted Teeth

What is an impacted tooth?

Sometimes a permanent tooth does not erupt into the mouth as expected. This is most commonly seen with canine teeth and may require a minor surgical procedure to help guide the tooth into its proper position.

At Noblesville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, we work closely with your orthodontist to expose the impacted tooth and help bring it into alignment.

Coordinated surgical and orthodontic care for a healthy, confident smile.

What Is an Exposure & Bond?

An exposure and bond is a procedure used to help an impacted tooth erupt into the mouth.

During the procedure, your oral surgeon creates a small opening in the gum to access the impacted tooth. A small orthodontic attachment and chain are then bonded to the tooth.

Your orthodontist will later use this attachment to gently guide the tooth into its proper position over time.

Why Is It Needed?

An exposure and bond may be recommended when:

  • A permanent tooth has not erupted as expected
  • A tooth is blocked by another tooth or surrounding bone
  • An impacted canine requires orthodontic guidance
  • Your orthodontist determines that the tooth needs surgical assistance to erupt

What to Expect

Planning With Your Orthodontist

Your oral surgeon and orthodontist work together to determine the location of the impacted tooth and the best approach for treatment.

Day of Surgery

The procedure is typically performed with local anesthesia, sedation, or a combination of both depending on the patient’s age, needs, and preferences.

The impacted tooth is carefully exposed, and when indicated, a small orthodontic attachment is bonded to the tooth.

After Surgery

Some soreness and swelling are normal and typically improve over the next several days. You’ll receive detailed instructions for keeping the surgical area clean while it heals.

Your orthodontist will continue treatment and gradually guide the tooth into position.

  • I couldn't be happier

“I was referred to Noblesville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to have a tooth extracted and subsequently elected to have a bone graft and dental implant. I am in my 90’s and I couldn’t be happier with the care I received and the results of my implant. Dr. Parker and her staff were very professional and compassionate. If only my dental insurance would have been as professional and efficient!! ….I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Parker and the entire staff at NO&MS.”
