Changes in the mouth are common, and most are not serious. However, an area that looks unusual, does not heal, or changes over time may need further evaluation.
Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specially trained to evaluate abnormalities involving the mouth, jaws, and surrounding tissues.
When something doesn’t look or feel right, we’re here to help find answers.
What Should Be Evaluated?
Your dentist or physician may refer you for evaluation of:
- A sore that does not heal
- A lump, bump, or area of swelling
- White, red, or otherwise unusual tissue
- A cyst or lesion seen on an X-ray
- Changes involving the gums, tongue, lips, cheeks, or palate
- Unexplained pain or changes in sensation
- An area that has changed in size or appearance
What Is a Biopsy?
A biopsy involves removing a small sample—or sometimes the entirety—of an abnormal area so that it can be examined under a microscope.
The tissue is sent to a pathology laboratory for evaluation, which helps establish an accurate diagnosis and determine whether any additional treatment is needed.
Being referred for a biopsy does not mean that you have cancer. Many oral lesions are benign, but evaluating the tissue allows us to determine exactly what it is.
What to Expect
Evaluation
Your surgeon will review your health history, symptoms, imaging, and the area of concern.
Biopsy
When indicated, a biopsy can often be performed in our office. The area is thoroughly numbed, and sedation options may be available when appropriate.
Results
Once the pathology report is available, we’ll review the results with you and discuss whether any additional treatment or follow-up is recommended.
