What is a sinus lift?
For some patients, there is not enough bone in the upper jaw to safely and predictably support a dental implant.
A sinus lift, also called sinus augmentation, is a bone grafting procedure that helps create enough bone for dental implant placement. Depending on your anatomy, the implant may be placed at the same time as the sinus lift or after the graft has had time to heal.

Why Might I Need a Sinus Lift?
The roots of the upper back teeth sit near the maxillary sinuses. After these teeth are removed, the remaining bone may become thinner over time, and the sinus can expand into the area where the roots once were.
This can leave insufficient bone for an implant.
A sinus lift gently elevates the sinus membrane and allows bone grafting material to be placed beneath it, increasing the amount of bone available for implant placement.

Your Procedure
The sinus membrane is carefully elevated, and bone grafting material is placed to create additional bone height.
Depending on your anatomy, your dental implant may be placed at the same appointment or after the graft has had time to heal.
Recovery
Mild swelling, pressure, or congestion can occur after sinus grafting. You’ll receive detailed post-operative instructions, including temporary sinus precautions to protect the area while it heals.
