Wisdom Tooth Removal Aftercare

Recovery after wisdom tooth removal is typically smooth, and most patients begin to feel better within a few days. The following guidelines will help support healing and keep you comfortable.

Immediately After Surgery

  • Bite firmly on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding.
  • Replace gauze as needed if bleeding continues.
  • Avoid excessive talking, chewing, or disturbance of the surgical area.

The First 24 Hours

  • Do not rinse, spit forcefully, or use a straw.
  • Avoid touching the surgical area.
  • Begin prescribed medications as directed.
  • Use ice packs (20–30 minutes on/off) to reduce swelling.

Managing Bleeding

  • Some bleeding or oozing is normal after surgery.
  • Place gauze directly over the surgical site and bite firmly for 30 minutes.
  • Repeat as needed.
  • If bleeding persists, you may use a moistened black tea bag to help clotting.
  • If bleeding does not improve, please contact our office.

Swelling and Bruising

  • Swelling is expected and typically peaks around 2–3 days after surgery.
  • Apply ice packs for the first 24–36 hours.
  • Continue medications as prescribed.
  • Mild bruising or jaw stiffness may occur and will gradually improve.

Pain Management

  • Discomfort is usually most noticeable within the first 24–48 hours.
  • Take prescribed medications as directed.
  • Pain should gradually improve each day.
  • If pain worsens or does not improve, please contact our office.

Nausea

  • Nausea may occur from sedation or medications.
  • If you feel nauseous after surgery, start with clear liquids and slowly advance your diet.
  • Take anti-nausea medication if prescribed.

Diet

  • Begin with soft foods (yogurt, eggs, mashed potatoes, smoothies).
  • Avoid chips, nuts, popcorn, and hard foods initially.
  • Stay well hydrated.

Antibiotics (if prescribed)

  • Take all medications as directed.
  • Complete the full course.
  • If you develop a rash or reaction, stop the medication and contact our office.

What our patients are saying
  • I trust her completely

“Dr. Lora Parker is an truly exceptional oral surgeon. As a fellow dentist, I’m very selective about who I refer patients to, and I trust her completely. She combines outstanding clinical skill with a calm, compassionate approach that immediately puts patients at ease. Her communication is clear, and her office runs efficiently and professionally. She took care of my sister’s wisdom teeth and everything was great! I highly recommend Dr. Parker to anyone in need of oral surgery.”

    Karol V.

  • Best maxillofacial surgeon

“I had 2 teeth pulled today under sedation, and I got along very well. Lora Parker is by far the best maxillofacial surgeon that I have ever had. I’ve been to a few over the years. I definitely want to return next time I have to have some teeth pulled. Staff is very helpful and friendly.”

     Darrell S.

  • I couldn't be happier

“I was referred to Noblesville Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery to have a tooth extracted and subsequently elected to have a bone graft and dental implant. I am in my 90’s and I couldn’t be happier with the care I received and the results of my implant. Dr. Parker and her staff were very professional and compassionate. If only my dental insurance would have been as professional and efficient!! ….I am sincerely grateful to Dr. Parker and the entire staff at NO&MS.”

    Laurie D.

  • I highly recommend Dr. Parker

“Dr. Parker and the entire staff were amazing throughout my wisdom teeth removal experience. I was definitely nervous beforehand, but Dr. Parker took the time to explain the procedure thoroughly and answered all of my questions, which helped put me at ease. Her calm and reassuring demeanor made a big difference. My recovery process was smooth, and I truly appreciated that the office followed up afterward to check on how I was healing. I highly recommend Dr. Parker and her team to anyone in need of oral surgery.”
